Situation
The brand was established in two other European markets and arrived in Austria with a translated website, a German-language content library and a retail agreement that depended on shoppers recognising the name. None of the recognition came with them across the border.
Their assumption, a reasonable one on the surface, was that German-language coverage would carry. It did not. Their German press hits were on German titles writing for German readers, and they did not appear in Austrian results for the category terms their buyers used. Meanwhile the retail partner was asking sensible questions about brand awareness that nobody on the team could answer with anything but hope.
There was also a seasonality problem specific to the market. Their category peaks around a period Austrian retail treats differently from their home market, and the content calendar they had imported was pointed at the wrong months.

Audit
Category SERPs showed German sites filling gaps Austrian publishers had not covered — the opening for launch angles.
Approach
A market entry has one advantage a mature account does not: nothing is entrenched yet. We used the launch itself as the reason for Austrian editors to pay attention, then built underneath it.
Before anything was written, we went through what Austrian search actually returned for their priority category terms. A large part of the first page was German sites filling a gap no Austrian publisher had covered, which told us where the opening was.
The existing German content was reworked for Austria by a native writer: terminology, examples, retail references, and the seasonal framing moved to match how the category behaves here. A sizeable part of the library was not worth keeping and was cut.
The arrival on its own was not a story. The decision behind it was: why this market, at this moment, and what the company had found in Austrian consumer behaviour that made it worth the investment. That gave business desks something to write about that was not a product announcement.
Commissioned articles ran in Austrian consumer and lifestyle publications on subjects the brand could speak to credibly, with the product as the illustration rather than the subject.
Their retail partner's footprint was concentrated in a few federal states, so we prioritised the regional titles read there. National coverage is prestigious. Regional coverage sold through, and the retail partner noticed it.

In their words
Our retail partner stopped asking whether anyone in Austria had heard of us. The coverage gave them something concrete to point to on the shop floor.
